As a company we are constantly looking for ways to #greenyourworld by getting involved in community projects. This month, we competed in the World Environment Day Tree Planting Challenge at Christchurch’s Cranford Basin, as part of a large restoration project that is underway in this area.

World Environment Day Planting Challenge

The World Environment Day Planting Challenge was facilitated by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand, an organisation that is doing excellent work in managing a wide range of conservation projects across the country. Our team competed alongside teams from two other companies - Tuatara Structures and Switched On Group - Enhancing People’s Environments – in a race to plant as many kahikatea plants as possible.

Our team planted 634 trees in 2 hours!

After a morning full of competition, sweat and laughs, our team came in at second place, having planted a grand total of 634 trees in just 2 hours! Congratulations to the team from Switched On Group who took first place. We finished up with a delicious BBQ lunch hosted by Conservation Volunteers NZ. Everyone agreed it was a fulfilling and fun event; a great way to get out in the sun and work as a team in a different setting, all while giving back to a worthy cause!

More on the Cranford Basin Project

Our contribution of 634 trees is just a part of a much bigger project going on in the Cranford Basin. As part of the Matariki Tu Rākau One Billion Trees Programme funded by Ministry of Primary Industries, the long-term vision is to create Christchurch’s largest kahikatea forest since pre-European times, in memory of New Zealand servicemen that have served overseas since World War 1. Conservation Volunteers New Zealand plan to plant 37,000 kahikatea this winter, a huge undertaking which is the beginning of a legacy that will enhance the city’s biodiversity for years to come.
If your business or organisation is interested in being part of this exciting project, we are sure Conservation Volunteers NZ would be glad to hear from you; CLICK HERE to find out more about how your team can join a planting day.

We were really proud of the efforts of everyone involved in the World Environment Day Planting Challenge and we are looking forward to our next #greenyourworld project – keep an eye out on our blog and social media to see how we are giving back to the community each month!
