Nga mihi nui! On a bright, crisp afternoon, the team from Advance Landscape Systems joined hands with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) for a remarkable planting event at Waikākāriki, in the Horseshoe Lake section of the red zone, in celebration of Matariki. This wasn’t just about planting; it was about restoring a wetland to its natural beauty, reconnecting with our environment, and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa.

A Celebration of Matariki

Matariki, the Māori New Year, marks a time of remembrance, celebration, and renewal. It’s a time to honour those who have passed, reflect on the year that’s been, and look forward to the future. For us at Advance Landscape Systems, participating in this event was a perfect way to embrace these values by giving back to the land and community.

Our Day in the Wetlands

Our Canterbury team was excited to get their hands dirty for a cause that aligns with our mission of promoting sustainable landscapes. In just over two hours, we planted 168 native Carex, a type of grass crucial for wetland restoration. The goal? To help bring the wetland back to its original state, supporting biodiversity and creating a thriving habitat for native species.

Working alongside us was the dedicated team from AsureQuality. Together, our two teams managed to plant over 300 natives, making a significant contribution to the restoration efforts.

A Big Thank You

A huge thank you to Conservation Volunteers New Zealand for organizing this incredible event and allowing us to be a part of it. Your efforts in environmental conservation are truly inspiring, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute. Special thanks to AsureQuality for their fantastic mahi (work) and partnership in making the day a success.

As we reflect on our experience, we’re reminded of the words of Te Wharehuia Milroy: "Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua" – "I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past." By planting native species and restoring wetlands, we’re not just creating a better environment for tomorrow; we’re honoring the legacy of those who came before us.
