As part of our #greenyourworld commitment, our way of giving back in June was to partner with a company that we stand in awe of for the remarkable work they have done and continue to do!
Trees That Count is a company that is commitment to counting the native trees planted throughout New Zealand, and helping Kiwis to plant more. Their goal is to make an impact on climate change and improve our environment by working towards their vision of helping to plant 200 million native trees across the country. This is a cause we are passionate about, and we supply products such as plant guards and weed matting to protect, nurture and sustain these trees in their early years.
We let them choose where they felt the trees were the most needed. 50 trees went to The West Harbour Beautification Trust, and a further 5 trees went to The Greenhill Planting Project. We have been provided some detail about them below.
The West Harbour Beautification Trust (WHBT) exists in order to enhance the natural beauty and amenities of Dunedin's West Harbour. Established in December 2013 the WHBT is an organisation dedicated to enhancing the natural character and amenities of Dunedin's West Harbour from Ravensbourne through to Aramoana. Working in partnership with other local groups and stakeholders the Trust focuses on issues such as sycamore / weed control, protecting native species (biodiversity enhancement), beautifying public spaces and amenities and developing and maintaining walking tracks and recreational spaces.
The Trust was formed after the State Highway 88 Beautification Trust was disbanded after achieving some excellent outcomes by improving the plantings along State Highway 88.
We are excited to support an organisation that has similar goals and aspirations as Advance Landscape Systems, such as weed control, protecting natives and maintaining walking tracks. If you are holidaying or visiting Otago, take a chance to visit State Highway 88 and Sawyers Bay as these are two areas where they are making a real difference!
Greenhill Planting Project
The Greenhill Planting Project is a young farming couple committed to improve the biodiversity of their sheep and beef farm in the Hawkes Bay. Incredibly, they have planted over 1700 natives along their waterways in just one year, a phenomenal achievement for 2 people who have a long-term goal to pass on a thriving native forest to their children, something as a NZ family business, we are right behind. See below more on them:
Not only does the Greenhill Planting Project have to comply with upcoming farm waterway and planting legislative changes, we WANT to. We believe that by starting the native planting journey now, we will in-turn encourage our neighbours to join us, simply by looking over the fence and seeing what’s going on at our place, we hope that others in our area will join in and get planting. Together, we will enhance the biodiversity of our area and be able to pass on a thriving native forest to our children. We’re lucky to be supported by a local nursery Tree Guys in Central Hawke’s Bay, who specialise in native planting and have partnered with us in our native planting thus far. This ensures the native trees are endemic to our area and will thrive where they are planted.
We are pleased to have been able to support these two worthy organisations through Trees That Count, and we will continue and support and align with this initiative in future. If your company is also interested in doing your bit, you can visit their website HERE.
